THE recent music spectacular - One Big Weekend - proved the power of word of mouth.
In this case the "mouth" in question was Radio 1 and its DJs.
For the past month millions of listeners have tuned in day after day to hear reference after reference of Preston - a city in the north west many may never have heard of let alone visited.
Now there can hardly be anyone who is not familiar with the city and Moor Park.
So I am using this first blog to call upon the City Council - recently taken over by the Tories after decades of Labour rule - to make the most of this incredible opportunity.
The amount of free publicity heaped upon Preston is a gift the likes of which we have not seen since city status was first bestowed on us five years ago.
Preston has shown it can compete with anywhere else to hold large, showcase events.
The police force, public transport companies and city council teams coped admirably and deserve recognition.
Do not let One Big Weekend become simply a memory.
Instead, let it be a catalyst for the city's ongoing regeneration projects.
Take the baton and run with it.
