GREENGROCER Rennie Simpson had a special visitor in 1964 – who took him back to his war days in 1943.
For when he escaped from an internment camp in northern Italy, he had not far to go before finding shelter in a farmhouse, not far from Milan.
With fellow escapees, he hid for six weeks in a barn belonging to Signor Achille Boselli, near Milan, before finding his way back to England, via Switzerland.
The visitor to his home, in Rosehill Road, Colne, was Enrica Boselli, the daughter of his protector 21 years earlier, who had been just a toddler while he laid low from the Nazis.
Said Rennie, who served in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps: “I will always be thankful to the family for the way they helped us during the war, and I have been back twice since to visit with them.”
