It will be a family affair as two generations take part in a charity race.
Karen Kennings, will be taking part in this year’s Cancer Reaserach UK Race for Life, alongside her sister, Vicky Cookson and aunt, Jean Levett.
Mrs Kennings, has also rallied her work collegues from the Abbey Veterinary Centre in Fulwood to take part in the race in the city’s Moor Park on, Sunday.
Seventeen vets, nurses, receptionists from the two centre’s in Conwy Road and Watling Street Road, in Fulwood, will be raising money for the charity.
The mother-of-two, who lives in Ashton, said: “We enrolled as a group in April and since then have been rallying round getting sponsorship and designing a waiting room display to let visitors to the practice know that we are taking part.
“Most have never taken part in an event like this before, some of us were apprehensive at first but the support and generosity we have received from clients and well wishers so far will definitely get us to the finish line.
“We are all expecting a few aches and pains but the money we raise will make it worthwhile.”
The 32-year-old, who works as a receptionist at the vets surgery, also had a personal reason for taking part in the fundraising event.
In October 2005, her mother Janice, 53, was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and died two months later.
She added: “This was a very difficult time for the family, we had many questions we needed answering and both the national and local cancer charities we able to help.
“If taking part in the race helps others get through this tough time or even not have to go through it at all then our efforts will have been well worth it.”
Helen Smith, veterinary surgeon at the practice said “At work we treat sick animals and nurse them back to health on a daily basis, by taking part in the Race for Life hopefully the money we raise will do the same for people affected by cancer.
”With only a few days left until the event we are embarking on more exercise be it taking our dogs out for longer walks or leaving the car at home. “Ultimately we are all now looking forward to the day and the memories it will bring.”
