TAKE two guitars, three voices and a bucket load of talent and you have the recipe for a great night out.

Quite why Burnley Mechanics wasn't packed to the rafters for this show - which saw two of the finest contemporary British songwriters on stage together - perhaps says much about our collective failure to appreciate that good live events are still out there is you are prepared to give them a try.

Undeterred by the small crowd, who made up for a lack of numbers with their enthusiasm, the first half of the show saw Boo Hewerdine treat the audience to a minor fraction of some of the songs he's written.

These included Be Good which was a hit with his band The Bible and the enchanting Patience of Angels, made famous by Eddi Reader.

Come the second half, Hewerdine was back along with singer Dorie Jackson to support Squeeze stalwart Chris Difford.

The set was a mixture of Squeeze classics and Difford's solo work, including a number of songs from his new album The Last Temptation of Chris and it proved to be a joyous hour of entertainment.

When your back catalogue includes Up the Junction, Tempted and Labelled With Love, a successful night should be guaranteed.

But with new songs proving equally memorable, this was actually something quite special.
