Battle victory is a high note for Darwen band

DARWEN band Kreuz have beaten off competition from more than 3,000 bands to win the regional semi-final of Britain's biggest contestfor unsigned bands.

Kreuz — made up of Glenn Evans, 32, guitarist and backing vocalist; Jordan Small, 22, lead vocalist; Simon Pickup, 22, bassist; and Tom Davies, 22, drummer — scooped first place in the prestigious Surface Unsigned National Competition in Manchester recently.

“It's an amazing feeling to know that you've been judged better than so many other bands, especially since we've only been together for 10 months,” said Glenn, who works with his father buying and selling motorcycles.

Now the band will battle it out with 13 other semi-finalists in the north for a place in the final in September at Manchester Academy.

The winners will receive a prize worth £50,000 including £5,000 cash, production equipment, and studio time.

“It's a phenomenal prize,” added Glenn. “But although we'd love to win, it isn't our main priority.

"We’d be over the moon to get to the final, it’s the exposure we’re looking for.

"Ultimately we'd love to get signed and we've always said from day one that we thought we could make it in the industry.”

Kreuz describe their music as “powerpop” and “a bit like Fallout Boy” but are keen not to be pigeonholed.

“We're into all kinds of music, if we were to list our influences we'd be here all day,” said Glenn, “We're inspired by life and our experiences."

The band believe their success could lie in their mass appeal.

“We've got a unique sound,” said Glenn.

“Somebody aged 50 could listen to our music and think it’s pleasant and melodic, and someone aged 16 could listen and really enjoy the energy in it.

"We're not indie, we’re not punk, we're something original.
