IT’S often said that Kylie’s longevity is due to her talent for “reinventing” herself.

This basically means that every few years she gets a new producer and a new wardrobe.

Her latest album, Aphrodite, is not so much reinvention as “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, as it sticks fairly close to the catchy disco pop that she’s been peddling for the last ten years.

This forms the backbone of Les Folies, and, in keeping with the album’s title, the theme appears to be Greek mythology – from her Boticelli’s Birth of Venus entrance in a giant golden shell to riding Pegasus and swooping across the arena on the back of an Icarus-like winged dancer.

There’s also a detour through space, mysticism, and the undersea clutches of a giant tentacled monster (the Kraken?) using a dramatic bank of video projection walls.

The live action is played out in high camp by thrusting, writhing, semi-naked Adonis-like backup dancers who range from golden-armoured gladiators to some kind of bizarre S&M-masked slaves.

Yep, Kylie certainly knows her audience.

The diminutive Aussie songstress herself goes through about eight costumes, ranging from a tinfoil ball gown to something that looks like it was designed to hold a giant roll of toilet paper. It’s couture, don’t you know?

She looks fantastic in all of them, and it’s almost impossible to believe that she’ll turn 43 next month.

Those lucky enough (or rich enough at £250 a ticket) to gain access to the VIP splash zone in the centre of the stage get an incredible close-up view of the action, as well as a good soaking from a revolving 20ft water jet fountain during the All the Lovers finale.

The ticket comes with a goody bag which includes – and this isn’t an April Fool’s Day joke – a plastic mac and a towel.

They do come in handy for anyone who doesn’t want to reinvent themselves as a drowned rat.

Of course, if reinventing oneself was as simple as Kylie makes it look, we’d all be doing it and selling millions of records, so there’s no point sitting there and sneering.

It would take a cynical pop-hater indeed not to find the whole experience, like, totally fabulous – it looks a million dollars (it cost about 25 of them), it’s packed with memorable pop hits and Kylie is as beautiful, warm and loveable as ever. Cha-ching!
