Review: The Rat Pack Vegas Spectacular @ Albert Halls, Bolton

A SLICE of Las Vegas was served up in Bolton to the delight of a packed Albert Halls last week.

The songs made famous by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr — otherwise known as The Rat Pack — were on the menu and deliciously delivered by a trio of talented singers accompanied by an equally talented band of musicians and two dancing girls.

They may have long since passed away but thankfully their songs live on and Wayne Kennedy, Roman Marek and Patrick Kumah filled the theatre with “some of the greatest music of the 20th century”. Wayne is responsible for developing the show, which is set in the bar of The Sands in Vegas, and his Dean Martin voice reproduces favourites such as Volare, Sway and King Of The Road.

Roman, a finalist in the first series of The X Factor, played the role of Frank Sinatra and although the audience took a while to warm to his American accent and his attempt at humour, he did eventually win them over when performing My Way and other favourites.

He also stole the show when he invited a member of the audience to join him for a duet.

Jan, from Bolton, in the second row was quick to volunteer and the pair entertained with a version of Sinatra’s Something Stupid.

Patrick’s strong voice may not quite sound like that of Sammy Davis Jr, but he nevertheless brought back many memories for an audience in which many may have been able to recall the real thing.

The stage seemed a little too small even for the two dancing girls, and the closeness of the orchestra occasionally seemed to drown out the singers.

Nevertheless it was an entertaining night which was completed with an encore of the obligatory New York, New York, for which the audience got to their feet quite willingly even without “Frank” insisting with his order to “Get up!”
