Who’s the most sparkliest show-stopper around to turn on the Oxford Street Christmas lights? Only Cheryl Fernandez-Versini!
It’s been a busy few months for The X Factor star. She’s returned to front-line judging duty with Mr Cowell, looks set to claim her fifth number one single with I Don’t Care on Sunday, and now gets to play a petite Geordie version of Santa on London’s busiest shopping street.
She wowed the crowds in a stunning black military tunic-style jacket. Not physical, paralysis-inducing stunning, we might add. Just quite fashionable.
She was joined by chart-topping group Rixton and singer Jess Glynne. The event was hosted by John Lewis – who apparently have a new ad out.
The singer, her hair tied back and blinged-up poppy puffed out, looked very jolly as she plunged the lights ablaze.
Literally thousands gathered to help Cheryl count down to the moment when she hit the button, in a manner that we’re assured wasn’t at all patronising.
The display features 750,000 lower-energy LED bulbs, strung along the length of the famous London street.
The illumination ceremony featured a performance of the carol O Holy Night by teenage competition winner Lauren Mae Kidd. The 16-year-old from north London won a social media talent competition to make her public debut at the event.
She taught herself to play the guitar before honing her skills at the True Stars Academy, a theatre school set up by EastEnders actress Brooke Kinsella in 2010.
