Ken Dodd is a legend. How many 80 year-olds do you know who could stand on a stage and perform to a packed theatre for five hours?

Ken has the speed and delivery of a much younger comedian — I had to concentrate in order to keep up with him, and even then I’m sure I missed half the jokes he was telling — but he also has the experience to keep the audience with him during his epic performances.

Despite being one of the younger audience members there were some brilliantly funny off-the-cuff moments.

Then there are the references to the local area which always go down well.

Being cynical I reckon Ken simply adds the right town name to get a laugh, but who’s going to complain.

The full Doddy show is part stand-up, part music hall. It’s far too long for normal mortals to take in but as long as there’s someone to laugh, Doddy will simply keep going.

There’s no denying that he is a great all-round entertainer, if a bit uncouth at times, but when my Nanna said ‘I like Ken Dodd!’, I realised I was at least 50 years too young to fully appreciate him.
