Ancient Oak in Cottam

I refer to the letter written by one of your readers that visited the Ancient Oak at Cottam recently.

Obviously this reader was very dissatisfied on her visit to The Ancient Oak, yet she was asked did she want to order and complained that they had just sat down. And complained that they had a 45 minute wait on food.

Then when she ordered her burger and chips, she again complained that when the food came and when she bit into it, if it had dropped onto the floor, it would of bounced back. Why not complain to the waitress when ordering or receiving the ketchup or condiments?

Obviously your reader had obviously not intended to go out for a nice lunch/meal as she was intent on finding something to complain about.

Me, my husband and children have visited this family restaurant on a number of occasions and on all of these, we have always felt welcoming and inviting. We have had numerous meals from carveries, sandwiches burgers etc, never ever have we had a bad meal. We have been mid week evenings and weekends and even a Sunday lunch time.

We have waited half an hour or so for our food but you do expect to wait for good food.

Being greeted by someone young with the words "love" is maybe someone’s way of being friendly, obviously this reader who is pregnant has lost her sense of taste and her sense of humour.

Maybe next time she needs to give this young girl a break, or politely say "I’d rather you didn't call me love or something to that effect".

And as to waiting a further five minutes for ketchup, maybe sense would have suggested that when the food was brought out to her table, the diner would have asked for it then, or when a waitress passed by, rather than write an email to a local newspaper. Maybe she might of been better speaking to the manager or assistant manager on duty to rectify the problem rather than escalating it.

To the point that the diner says "I’ll not set foot in the ancient oak again", I find it very hard to believe that a reader has waited so long to contact yourselves or for you to print this as the Ancient Oak hasn't done table service since 22nd August 2008.

Since the refurbishment of the The Ancient Oak, the whole place has changed for the better, the atmosphere, the food, the clientele and now fuzzy eds is open for fee play and it’s a great for us parents to chill out as well as the kids.

the staff are brilliant. People need to go and try for themselves!
