Motorists in Preston urged to lock up valuables

Police in Preston are urging residents to remove valuables from their vehicles following a sharp increase in break-ins.

It follows 104 vehicle crimes reported to police in the St Matthews area of the city between 2006/07, and 75 crimes between 2007/08.

In a bid to tackle the problem, officers have put ten pairs of high-visibility vehicle crime prevention signs around the area to remind visitors and residents to remove all valuables from their vehicles and not to leave items on display.

The signs have been put on lamp-posts around the area where historically most vehicle crime offences occur.

I went to college in Preston, worked in the town/city centre and still travel there quite a bit to shop, eat and drink, but I have never heard of the St Matthews area. Any clues as to where it is or do readers have to have presumed knowledge these days?
