NEIL Lennon refused to be too downbeat despite seeing his Wanderers side topple out of the Capital One Cup to League One Burton Albion.

The Whites boss watched his side spurn several good chances, the best of which fell to striker Gary Madine who headed on to the crossbar from inside the six yard box.

Matthew Palmer scored a deflected goal four minutes from time to see Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s side through to the second round but Lennon was far from despondent.

“We can’t be disappointed with the performance,” he told The Bolton News. “But that’s football. They got a huge slice of luck with the goal but we have to be better in the final third.

“Gary has missed an open goal. I honestly don’t know how he missed it.

“We need to get up to speed because while we created goods chances, we missed them.

“I don’t see it as a huge upset, or that we deserved to lose the game, it was just bad luck on the night.”

Wanderers travel to Middlesbrough this weekend in the Championship and Lennon admits his side will need to improve on certain aspects.

“You have to analyse it in the cold light of day and there were a lot of good things about our play tonight,” he said.

“I thought Mark Davies was outstanding and it was a good debut for Rob Holding as well.

“In general the football was good but we missed that little bit of composure from players that are better than that.”
