TRANSFER RECORD

IT is perhaps inevitable, after the club signed Andre Gray for £6 million, that supporters will ask why the money was not spent last season.

Availability is a valid reason — Gray had just been plucked from non-League football. Finance is another factor. A chunk of the £12 million-plus spent by the Clarets on their six closed-season signings has come via transfer fees from summer departures.

Building for the future, with a portion of their Premier League money spent on training facilities at Gawthorpe, and balancing the books remain priorities for Burnley.

LUKAS JUTKIEWICZ

THE striker responded admirably to what cannot have been the easiest of weeks. Jutkiewicz delivered everything but that elusive Burnley goal on being restored to the line-up to face Brentford on Saturday.

You sense it is not far away — but with more than half of their summer spend put towards bringing in Rouwen Hennings and Gray, starts may now be at a premium.

MIDFIELDERS

THE need for reinforcements is apparent.

For all Scott Arfield’s endeavour in central midfield, he has been more effective out wide.

David Jones remains prudent in possession and efficient at breaking up play but the Clarets are missing Dean Marney, who could be two months from a recall after injury.
