WANDERERS are going for experience as they look to appoint a successor to outgoing assistant manager Johan Mjallby.

Neil Lennon wants to name his new right hand man early this week after Mjallby returned home to Sweden citing “personal and family reasons.”

The club are keeping the identity of the new man a closely-guarded secret but The Bolton News understands he has a proven track record at both club and international level, and has worked with the Whites boss before.

It is also believed that former Wanderer Alan Thompson is not being considered for the post.

Lennon revealed that Mjallby would be leaving the country after Wanderers picked up their first win of the season, beating Wolves 2-1 at the Macron.

“He has to go back home for personal and family reasons,” the manager explained.

“We knew it might have been on the cards for a while. We’re hoping to get someone in and announce it on Monday if possible.”

Mjallby worked with Lennon at Celtic and followed both him and Garry Parker to Bolton in October last year.

The former Sweden international has been credited with a big hand in Wanderers’ defensive improvements this season.

Lennon, meanwhile, was delighted to pick up three points on Saturday, which lifted the club into 16th place in the Championship table.

Zach Clough scored his first goal of the campaign from the penalty spot, adding to a well-taken opener from Liam Feeney.

And while ex-Whites loanee Benik Afobe caused a few second-half flutters with a penalty of his own, Wanderers held on to claim a win that lightens the mood around the camp after a winless start.

“That’s three unbeaten now – or am I clutching at straws here?” Lennon laughed. “We’ve actually played better and lost games this season, so this is a refreshing change.

“It’s great to get off the mark because we haven’t really got the points our performances have merited at times.

“Hopefully it’s onwards and upwards from here. I asked the players to keep believing, and they did. They deserve it and so do the fans because they’ve been right behind us.”

Meanwhile, Wanderers will run checks on midfielder Neil Danns before tomorrow’s home game against Sheffield Wednesday after he left the field with concussion against Wolves.

Josh Vela would most likely come into contention after impressing in the second half.
