THE EX-BOYFRIEND of a former East Lancashire barmaid, found dead in Australia, is being treated as a prime suspect over her death, police have revealed.

Detectives investigating Anya Campbell's death said it was being treated as suspicious and they have launched a murder-style inquiry.

The 24-year-old's final hours are still being pieced together by detectives after her body was discovered at a house in the northern Perth suburb of Carine - four days after she was reported missing.

A post mortem examination has failed to ascertain the cause of death and further tests are being carried out.

A 25-year-old man, Anya's ex-boyfriend, has been charged with one count of assault occasioning bodily harm. Police said the charge relates to a separate matter not connected to Anya's death.

But police said that the man, who has not been named, was being treated as a prime suspect over the death.

Officers said there were no clear signs showing how Anya, who worked behind the bar at the Whalley Arms for seven months last year, died.

The bubbly young barmaid became well known in Whalley after she had spent time staying with family in the village.

She had been travelling around the UK with her 28-year-old sister, Sinead and came to East Lancashire looking for work experience.

Anya, the youngest daughter of Ian and Dee Campbell, of Warwick, Perth, returned to Australia last Christmas after her mother became ill.

Police had to break into the Mathis Way home and found Anya's body in the bathroom at 3am on July 31.

Detective sergeant Terry Rakich, operations manager at Western Australia Police's Major Crime Unit, said Anya's death was still being treated as suspicious.

DS Rakich added: "Further investigations are being undertaken by the pathologist.

"We are waiting for the results of that.

"Anya's ex-boyfrined has been charged in relation to a matter not connected to her death. But he is still a person of interest to us in terms of her death. We are pursuing that as part of our inquiry."

When asked if he was a prime suspect, he replied: "Yes."
