THE FAMILY of a man who died after being found collapsed at the bottom of a stairwell have been told that no charges will be brought in the case.

Patrick Healey, 34, of Wycoller Avenue, Burnley, sustained fatal head injuries at a house in Sandpiper Square on May 21 after a day drinking with friends.

A 28-year old man was arrested at the scene before being released on police bail.

Yesterday (Thursday) Mr Healey's family were informed that the Crown Prosecution Service had decided that no charges would be brought against him.

Mr Healey was found collapsed at the bottom of the stairwell to the house and was taken to Burnley General Hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Det Supt Mick Gradwell said:"Mr Healey's family have been informed that no charges will be brought against the 28-year-old man who was arrested as there is insufficient evidence for a prosecution to take place.

"His family are obviously still very upset about his death and that no charges have been brought."

The post mortem examination revealed that Mr Healey, a former butcher, died from a smashed skull sustained through a single blow to the back of the head.

Police had originally launched a murder inquiry after he was found, and had arrested eight people who had been drinking at the house on the night.

Seven people were later released without charge.

An inquest is now due to take place in Blackburn within the next few months to investigate the events surrounding his death.
