A WALKING festival inviting Blackburn with Darwen residents to explore the countryside is to be officially launched a week on Sunday by Mayor, Coun Maureen McGarvey.

The West Pennine Moors Walking Festival 2007 gets underway at Sunnyhurst Wood Visitor Centre, Darwen, at 1.30pm on September 2, and two free guided walks will take place immediately after the launch.

The guided walks will take place over nine days, covering the West Pennine Moors, from Witton Country Park in the north, to Turton tower in the south, and from Tockholes in the west, to Calf Hey reservoir in the east.

Coun Michael Law-Riding, the council's executive member for leisure and culture, said: "Walking is a great way to keep fit and healthy, whatever your age and ability. And why not explore the spectacular countryside which surrounds us at the same time?"

People will also have the chance to explore part of Witton Weavers Way, enjoy a walk to Darwen Tower, find out about herbal remedies, learn about local geology, and discover historic villages.
