Olympic-style games to begin

12:10pm Monday 3rd December 2007

Schoolchildren can go for gold by sponsoring the Primary School Indoor Games taking place at the Guild Hall, Preston, on Wednesday, from 10.15am-4pm.

The annual event, organised by Preston City Council's sports development unit and held in association with the Preston Harriers, will see more than 300 potential future Olympians from local schools compete against each other in a number of indoor events including the 100 metre sprint, relay, triple jump, hurdles and javelin.

Reflecting the traditional Olympic Games, each school team will represent a different country of the world and have been encouraged to get into the competitive spirit by dressing in their chosen country's colours and making replica national flags to promote their team.

Once the events are over, each school team, consisting of six boys, six girls and two spectators, will compete in the Grand Relay Race.

The winners of this will be named games champions.

Medals will be given to the top three schools and a trophy will be awarded to the winners Altaf Patel, a partner at MWR Solicitors, sponsors of the event, said: "MWR Solicitors is committed to helping promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle for children.

"We have a tradition of sponsoring sporting talent and being involved in such an exciting event as the Primary School Indoor Games can only help encourage the children to be more active.

"And who knows, we may just uncover the next few world champion athletes!"

Preston City Council's Sports Development Unit has arranged an athletics development programme to take place following the event.

Coaches from Preston Harriers will be selecting athletes to attend specially set up training squads and create a super squad' to represent Preston in a competition against other Lancashire boroughs.
