A PRESTON man was today described as 'stable but poorly' after being assaulted outside a Darwen pub last night.
He was initially said to be critically ill after the incident in Church Street, Darwen, at 11.50pm on Saturday.
But today his condition improved to "stable but poorly".
He was transferred from the Royal Blackburn to the Royal Preston Hospital for more specialist treatment on a head injury.
A 19-year-old Darwen man has been arrested in connection with the incident and was being questioned by detectives today.
Police were called to reports of an incident outside the Bridgewater pub and discovered a man, 43, from Preston, unconscious on the pavement.
Officers said he had been out on a friend's 21st birthday when he was attacked.
There was no indication a weapon had been used, officers added.
It is believed there had been a fight near the bus station involving a number of people which the victim became caught up in.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
Det Sgt Mick Cross, of Darwen CID, said: "We believe an altercation occurred near to the bus station on Saturday night involving a number of individuals.
"At this stage we are not sure exactly how many people were involved.
"The man was in the town with a number of friends and we are carrying out a thorough investigation in to the incident.
"There is no indication that the attack was inside the pub and we believe it was outside.
"There was no mention of weapons having been used in the attack and we would welcome any information anybody might have in relation to the incident."

I totally agree with you concerning anyone slapping them, they are then off crying to their parents who in turn cry to the police. Talking of the parents where are they whilst their so called little angels are out terrorizing the community?
Another night of shame for Darwen. I dont go round Darwen anymore because of the young trouble makers that are in the pubs. Im not worried about my safety to much but if i was to get in a fight with some of this scum and you slapped one who ended up hurt gues who would be in the nick! They should raise the age of pub goers in Darwen or some of the pubs to 25 +. Regular patrols on the streets and up to date radio's between doormaen who can radio any trouble in advance. There are plenty of cctv cameras around that area so im sure the scum that attacked this chap will get caught. Get them sent inside or down the local boxing club where decent lads will be ready for a good scrap. these youngsters are a set of ****!!!

I pray for the day that the decent folk of Darwen stand together as one and say enough is enough. These toy town gangsters are ruining a once decent place for a night out. To the injured man and his friends and family I hope he makes a full recovery. Good Luck from one of the few decent folk left in Darwen.
pohaku,do you go about your business with your eyes closed, if you cared enough you would see far more decent people than the chavscum that you seem to be in favour of spotting, open your eyes next time you might be pleasantly surprised

This doesn't however, make it acceptable and I agree with other posters on here that the only way to stop it is to have an increased police presence and meaningful sentences passed down by the Courts.
i think a lot of people are taring people with the same brush, age limit to go to 25 thats not fair, and saying that all darwen is scum is a bit harsh. i know that town has its idiots who cant handle beer but that doesnt mean none of us can. As for walking through town during the day and there is 'chavscum' everywhere thats also a bit harsh. i agree there are lots of lazy people who cant be bothered to work knocking about but thats just England lately, this country is going to pot not just Darwen! I have worked and studied hard since i left school and was recently on maternity leave from work and the looks i used to get when i walked through town pushing my pram were prob from the likes of 'Scum breeds scum' there are plenty of good people in Darwen but also idiots but thats everywhere these days not just Darwen. I sincerley hope that the injured man is ok and my thoughts are with him and his family but lets not let these idiots doing these things give us all a bad name.

Just out of curiosity, how is a fight of such scale able to happen in the busiest town centre pub @ midnight?
It would seem obvious to have police stationed outside the pub at such a time.
Instead they hide round corners, sat in a van eatin takeaways. Brilliant.
