Fishergate Shopping Centre has installed a chip and pin facility in its car park for shoppers using credit/debit cards as method of payment.
The new facility, installed last month, has already proven to be very popular with customers, as the number of people using the credit card facility has greatly increased since its introduction.
Keith Mitchell, Fishergate Shopping Centre Manager, said: "Safety and security is our number one priority to our shoppers.
"We introduced our ChipCoin car parking system in April 2006, to provide a faster, safer and more efficient way of paying for car parking.
"The Chip and Pin facility, which is now commonplace amongst most retailers, will provide extra protection for shoppers as well as assist cc fraud reductions in the community."
According to Chip and Pin, since its introduction in 2005, there was a reduction of nearly £60m in counterfeit and fraud on lost and stolen cards when compared to 2004.
Extra car park staff will be on hand to assist shoppers with any queries they may have.
Shoppers are still able to make payments using the traditional cash method.
