FAMILIES can take part in a Victorian working class sing-song at a free open day later this month at an East Lancashire art gallery.

The festive Lancashire dialect choruses will be among the highlights of the event.

The Heritage Open Day will take place at Accrington's Haworth Art Gallery Sunday September 17 between noon and 4pm.

Visitors can join in a working-class sing along with Jennifer Reid, a performer of Victorian broadside ballads sung in Lancashire dialect.

The will also have the chance for to experience a guided walk from William Haworth’s old weaving shed, Scaitcliffe Mill, along the railway lines to Haworth Art Gallery.

Along the way, guests will learn more about the history of the Haworth family whilst taking in the beautiful views of Woodnook Nature Reserve and experiencing tales of the industrial heritage of the area.

Guests can get stuck in to crafts and dress-up activities and meet characters along the way who will share tales of the area’s industrial heritage.

Residents can meet the likes of 'Mr Beech the Coachman' who will relay the story of the Stables and Motor House at Haworth Art Gallery where William Haworth kept his prized Rolls Royce Silver Ghost car.

Gillian Berry, arts and heritage manager at the venue said: “We are delighted to join forces with Heritage Open Day and their effort to join with European Heritage Days to raise appreciation for Europe’s rich and diverse cultural assets and their need for care protection.

"It’s a chance for our communities to come together to learn, explore and have fun by sharing the treasures on their doorstep.”

Gallery staff members will guide free tours of the house.
