An inquest into the death of a mum who was fatally stabbed in an alleged murder in Bradford city centre has been opened.

Kulsuma Akter was stabbed several times at 3.20pm on Saturday, April 6.

She was taken to hospital and later died from her injuries.

Habibur Masum, 25, of Leamington Grove, Burnley, has been charged with her murder and appeared in court last week.

As Senior Coroner Martin Fleming opened the hearing at Bradford Coroners' Court, he said Ms Akter had died “under tragic circumstances”.

The 27-year-old was born on April 2, 1997, and died at Bradford Royal Infirmary, the brief hearing was told.

She was pushing her baby in a pram at the time of the incident which led to her death, Mr Fleming said.

The baby is safe and was not harmed in the incident, West Yorkshire Police confirmed.

Mr Fleming told the court: “The criminal procedure has now taken precedence over the inquiry, and under these circumstances I’m now proposing to suspend the coronial inquiry pending the outcome of the court proceedings.”

He asked the senior investigating officer from West Yorkshire Police to update the force's family liaison officer with the inquest's developments.

Habibur Masum, 25, is charged with murdering Ms Akter.

Masum, of Leamington Avenue, Burnley, is also charged with possession of a bladed article.

He appeared at Bradford Crown Court on Friday, April 12, via video link from HMP Leeds.

Masum spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth. He was not asked to enter pleas to either of the charges.

Judge Jonathan Rose remanded Masum into custody and set a provisional trial date of November 18 at the same court, with a time estimate of two weeks.

A plea and trial preparation hearing will take place on May 10.

A vigil in Kulsuma’s memory will be held in Centenary Square, Bradford, at 3pm on Saturday, April 27. A minute's silence is taking place at 3.21pm.
