FORMER Lancashire Chief Constable Sir Paul Stephenson is being tipped for the top job at the Metropolitan police.
Mr Stephenson, who was brought up in Rossendale, left Lancashire Constabulary in February 2005 after three years in the top job.
He was appointed Deputy Commissioner of the Met and oversees strategy, organisational performance and diversity.
He was knighted this year.
National newspaper reports suggest that current Met Chief Ian Blair could be set to leave the post.
Other contenders are said to be Kent Chief Mark Fuller, Sir Hugh Orde, Chief Constable of the Northern Ireland Police Service and Sir Norman Bettison, Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police.
