Woman's 'lucky escape' in Samlesbury crash

A WOMAN from East Lancashire had a lucky escape after the car she was travelling in flipped over on the motorway near Samlesbury this morning.

The 50-year-old was the passenger in a Citroen saloon when it span out of control close to junction 31 on the northbound carriageway of the M6 at 9.30am.

Motorway officer PC Glen Hilton said there had been a 'minor coming together' with a 32-tonne tipper truck as one of the vehicles changed lanes.

He said: "The initial impact didn't cause much damage, but due to the size difference, the Citroen span out of control, rolled at least once and came to a rest on top of the central reservation barrier.

"The car was half on the northbound carriageway and half on the southbound.

"Two lane of the northbound were closed and one lane of the southbound."

PC Hilton said the driver of the Citroen, a woman aged 50 from West Yorkshire, was 'walking wounded'.

The passenger, who is from East Lancashire, was cut from the wreckage as a precaution and brought out in a neck brace and on a spinal board.

She was given oxygen at the scene.

However, her injuries are not believed to be serious.

The air ambulance was scrambled, but wasn't needed and the casualties were taken to hospital by land ambulance.

PC Hilton added: "It could have been a lot worse with the vehicle flipping, but both were wearing seatbelts.

"The truck driver was uninjured, but shaken up. Both drivers tested negative for drink and drugs.

"We have a couple of witnesses and our investigations are ongoing."

The motorway was re-opened at 10.30am.
