PARKERS' Watchdog (Letters, July 30) correctly states that the setting of parking tariffs is the responsibility of the council.
However, his claim that tariffs have increased more than once this year is simply not true.
An Executive decision was taken on February 12 to increase all car park and on-street tariffs by 10p. This was publicised through the press and on-site, with a date for implementation of April 6. There have not been any other tariff increases since that date.
I do not consider that the council is "ripping-off the public" by reviewing tariffs on an annual basis. It is being consistent and also pursuing an on-going policy of encouraging people to consider alternative forms of transport, while also wanting to attract visitors and shoppers.
COUNCILLOR M. CONNOLLY,
Executive member,
environment and transport.
