DAVID Thompson insists that he's ready for a first team return this season -- after admitting he came back too soon a year ago.

The midfielder accelerated his comeback with a run out in the reserves on Tuesday, less than a week after making his first appearance at Ewood Park since last October in the friendly with Sporting Lisbon.

The knee problems that have dogged Thompson's career appeared to be behind him this time last year but he lasted just two months into the season before they returned to haunt him.

However, he has admitted that 12 months ago he tried to step up his push to be fit for the start of the Premiership too soon.

"I'm in no pain. It feels really good and I feel really positive for the new season," said Thompson. "I'm in higher spirits than I was this time last year.

"I was trying to come back when I probably knew that it wasn't right but this time round, I'm being honest with myself and being honest with the club and that's all I can be.

"Although you do the work in the gym and you come through the tests on the training ground, when you pull that kit on you're going hell for leather. But if the knee stands up then you know you're in with a shout, so, so far so good.

"I've still not got match fitness and I'm probably a little bit behind the boys. But I'll put the work in, that's one thing I've never been afraid of, and I'll get there."

As well as rediscovering the taste for first team action, being involved in the first team again has reminded Thompson of his status as a fans' favourite.

"I was really pleased to be back against Lisbon and to put the kit on again," he added.

"I was also glad I got a good welcome and was really flattered, so hopefully there will be a few more cheers along the line in the coming season.

"Everyone was disappointed with last season but we know where we went wrong, we're trying to put it right and I feel we are.

"The new players will give us a little bit more and something different. The lads are positive and the manager is positive and we just can't wait for the season to come."

Although he had to sit out the weekend friendly at Bray Wanderers, Thompson returned with an encouraging first half display at Morecambe against Everton reserves on Tuesday.

With the Premiership curtain raiser at home to West Brom just two days away, he's hoping for his opportunity of a first team recall.

"I hope I'm in the side, but if I'm not I'll be ready to be called on at any time," said Thompson.

"I need to get as fit as I possibly can so I'm available for selection and if the manager wants me, I'll be there."
