IT'S almost 30 years since the lightsaber first captured the imagination of a generation of budding Luke Skywalkers, Hans Solos and Princess Leias across the world.

But - despite being the weapon of choice for any self-respecting Jedi Knight - Blackpool Trading Standards officials have seized a batch of Star Wars-style toy lightsabers amid reports the intergalactic swords were potentially dangerous.

The rebel lightsabers came to the attention of members of the resort's Trading Standards 'Fair Trading Group' earlier this week.

A customer who had taken one of the toys home had found that, after a short time in use, the lightsaber's plastic, metallic-look handle had begun to melt.

After further investigation stocks of the toys were confiscated from two of the town's shops.

At this stage it is not known how many of the faulty lightsabers are in circulation but no injuries have been reported to Trading Standards officials. Fair Trading Group Manager, Tim Coglan, said: "If these toys are faulty, the base of the handle melts when the lightsaber is switched on.

"We are not aware of any injuries caused by this to date, but obviously are not prepared to take any chances.

"Offending stocks have been seized, and we aim to ensure that the toy isn't offered for sale anywhere else in Blackpool".

Blackpool's Trading Standards officials are now working hard to establish the source of the faulty toys.

But it is believed they were part of a batch recalled by the toy's importer and should never have made it on to any UK shop shelves.

Anybody who has purchased one of the toys are advised not to use it and to contact their local Trading Standards on 01253 478395.

Any retailers who have stock and are unsure as to its safety should contact the Consumer Protection Section of the Fair Trading Group on 01253 478383.
