A NEW scheme has been launched to improve the standard of private rented housing in Rossendale.

Rossendale Borough Council is encouraging local landlords to sign up to a new voluntary accreditation scheme.

It will improve conditions in private rented housing by setting condition and property management standards that tenants can expect when they rent accredited accommodation.

At the launch in Rawtenstall earlier this week three private landlords became the first in the borough to be presented with their accreditation.

It will be monitored by a steering group made up of a host of different organizations including private landlords, the fire service, Lancashire Police, the rent service, Rossendale Borough Council officials and tenants.

Duncan Shaw, senior renewal initiatives officer, who co-ordinates the scheme said: "This is an exciting opportunity for private landlords to improve standards and be rewarded through formal accreditation which will ultimately help landlords market their properties."
