HUNDREDS of dead and dying willow tress were reported to Friends of the Earth after the problem was highlighted in The Lancashire Evening Telegraph.

Pendle Friends of the Earth had reports from Blackburn, Rossendale, Preston, Ribble Valley, Bury, Burnley and Colne after the problem was first spotted in Cotton Tee, Trawden. Lancashire County Council announced it would be conducting a survey of willows on council land to try to ascertain the extent of the disease and devastation.

THE phrase "being a prisoner in your own home" took on a new meaning as No 2 Longridge Road, Chipping was put up for sale. The end of three property was the old village jail, which was in regular use until 25 years before being put up for sale. The cottage bore little resemblance to its former life, but the railings on the back of the property still existed.

50 years ago

BACK from Wimbledon with many cherished memories came Blackburn's Kathleen Stott. She lost in the women's singles championships to K Hubbell, US, and in the Wimbledon Plate. She wished that she had done better, but said getting to Wimbledon, as the first Blackburnian to do so, was honour enough.
