READING your letter on June 28, I thought I would enlighten you, Lorraine Whitehouse (Head of external Relations North), Royal Mail, Salford.

Tenants' and residents' associations all over the country are elected. They have a chairperson, vice-chair, secretary and treasurer and so does the Tenant Federation. We do work with councillors.

I can't speak for the other areas, where post offices are going to close, but the letter we received said: "Before any proposal is put into public consultation, a Post Office Ltd manager visits all the relevant branches, surveys the terrain, measures the distance, and gets information about local public transport facilities. We pay particular attention to the needs of the less able, the elderly, those without cars and those with pushchairs."

Intack branch PO is 0.8 miles from Whitebirk along hilly terrain and Furthergate PO is 0.5 miles from Whitebirk branch over hilly terrain. If you are elderly or disabled they say you can hop on a bus to the post office.

What they don't tell you about is the winter when the weather is really bad, and you are not going to be able to get to the post offices. You don't pay now to get your money, but you will when the weather is bad. The people who live around Whitebirk are not wealthy people and will find it hard to find money to pay bus and taxi fares to collect their money.

We on our association will fight for what is right for our tenants and residents.

JACQUELINE McGREW (Chairperson, Whitebirk and Intack Tenants' and Residents' Association).
