THE second meeting of the Young Athletes League season was held at Leverhulme Park and featured the six teams: Bolton, Bury, Blackley, Chorley, East Cheshire, and Horwich.

In the Under 13 girls competition, points were quickly on the scoreboard for Bury with Ellie Imoh finishing third in the 75m sprint, (11.5 seconds), followed by a fourth in the 150m, with Nicola Quick fourth in the B event.

Ellie completed her events with a fourth in the shot (3.20 metres). This was followed by Andrea Baker who was second in the 70m hurdles and fourth in the shot.

The Under 15 girls events featured the 'Holly Chapman and Laura Evans double act.' Holly was third in the shot and discus and runner-up in the javelin with a throw of 18.79 metres.

Laura won the long jump with a leap of 4.52 metres, was second in the 200m (28.7 secs) and her winning time of 4 minutes 54.7 seconds in the 1500m earned her the 'girl track athlete of the meeting' award.

There was another solid team display in the Under 17 Women competition.

The two new Mel's did the sprint double and showed what potential they have, with Mel Monks finishing third in both the 100 (14.53 secs), and 200m (30.4 secs), whilst Mel Haslam chalked up a second in the 100m B event (14.7 secs), coupled with a third (30.7 secs) in the longer sprint.

She then won the long jump B event alongside Liz Cheshire, who won the A event (4.30 metres).

The longer track events also brought good performances for the girls.

Liz Cheshire won the 300m (46.5 secs), with Natasha McDonald (48.4 secs) winning the B event.

Cheryl Sullivan came home second in the 1500m, while Jessica Simmons displayed her aptitude for the 3,000m with a superb solo winning performance that just ducked under the 12 minute barrier (11:59.7). The final track event, the 4 x 100m relay produced another third-placed finish for the team

Liz Cheshire went on to win the High Jump, before Amy Chapman added wins in the javelin, shot and discus. Natasha McDonald won in the B javelin and then finished second place in the B discus. Cheryl Sullivan improved her performances in the shot with another first in the B event, (5.52 metres).

There was another impressive pair at work in the Under 13 Boys section.

Adam Cheshire and Eddie Dutch were second in both the A and B 100m and the long jump. Adam also won the B 200m while Eddie won the A 800m (2:38.7 mins), where Nick Barker was just behind him in second place in the B event. Nick also competed in the shot where he finished fifth.

Ross Little, won the A 200, (30.6 sec) and was second in the 1500m (5:22.9 mins). The relay team won the 4 x 100 relay.

Both sprints in the Under 15 Boys section were covered by Mathew Elkin and Mark Hudson, with Mathew third in the 100m and fifth in the 200m; Mark Hudson's second place in the 100m was followed by a third in the longer sprint.

Running the middle distance double of 400m and 800m was Nick Lamont, who finished second in the 800 and thirrd in the 400 (66.2 secs).

Scott Evans won the 1500m (4:36.3 mins) before Chris Riley finished second in the 3,000m (10:44.5 mins). The relay team finished third in the 4 x 100m relay.

The long jump had Nick Lamont third (4.52 meters), but there were several gap in the field events.

Kevin Stout won his 800m (2:11.8 mins) race in the Under 17 Mens event, with James Dagg winning the 1500m in 4:31.7 mins).

James also did his share of field events, winning the B long jump, and the B high jump, supported by Mike Bromilow who won both the A events very impressively, as well as winning the B 800m.

Neil Ward did well to win his 100m (12.1 secs), before they all combined to win the 4 x 100 relay (49.2 secs).

The final team result had the host club Bolton clear winners with 532 points.

But Bury were there in second place with 412 points, ahead of East Cheshire in third with 384 points.
