BURY Croquet Club's Peelers visited Bowdon on Sunday to play their St Mary's team.

In the doubles, Ken Anderton and Jean Partington saw trouble in store when the lead Bowdon player got in at the fourth turn for an eleven-hoop break.

After some time, Ken caught up while Jean and the other Bowdon player made slow progress, so with an hour to go honours were about even.

The other Bowdon player then finally got going and the pair pegged out with half an hour to spare.

On the other court Barbara and Geoff Young had a dour game.

Barbara had a good break early on, while the other three players were scoring in ones and twos if at all.

The visitors were still ahead when the home pair finally used their bisques to catch up, winning by a single hoop at Time.

In the singles, Ken's adversary pretty much repeated his morning start, getting a long way with both balls before Ken scored a hoop.

Ken then got one ball round in a turn but could not repeat this with the other, losing with nearly an hour to go. Barbara was the other winner of a completed game, by three points and close to the time limit.

Geoff had a rather scrappy game winning by the 'golden hoop' after the other player jammed in a hoop on the Time turn.

Jean's game began with a long break, using less than half the bisques, by her opponent.

The rest of the game was tight and even, but she never caught up. The final score was defeat for the Peelers by two games to four.
