THREE paintings by Darwen artist Margaret Chapman go under the hammer today.

The lots – an oil painting of old market buildings in Blackburn, a watercolour of a gas iron seller, and a colour print of people admiring a car – are featured in a specialist auction by Capes Dunn, Manchester.

They are expected to sell for between £60 and £350.

Margaret Chapman’s work has seen a surge in popularity since her death in 2000.

She studied art with John Lennon in Liverpool and held an exhibition at Darwen Library in the late 1960s, where she was spotted by a dealer.

She lived in Hawkshaw Avenue, Darwen, before moving to Southport.
