A 15-year-old boy has been given a youth referral order for carrying a firework in a residential street.

Neighbourhood police stopped the boy in Watery Lane, Darwen, at 8pm on Friday after calls from worried residents.

The rocket was unlit, but the boy will now be dealt with by the council’s Youth Services, where he will be taught about the dangers of his behaviour.

In the run up to Bonfire Night, officers are stepping up their patrols to crack down on juvenile nuisance with fireworks.

Sgt Mark Wilson said: “We usually patrol until 9pm, but we are now going to extend that until midnight in the run-up to November 5.

“We will focus on juvenile nuisance with fireworks, and reassuring vulnerable members of the public.”

Anyone with concerns about the use of fireworks or about the sale of fireworks to children can call police on 01254 222135.
