A YOUNG drunk who robbed his own mother, after threatening her with a pair of kitchen scissors, has been given 18 months in youth custody.

Judge Andrew Woolman said Ian James Fraser’s attack on Sharon Donoghue, after she had refused to give him £50, was ‘deplorable’.

And Burnley Crown Court heard that Fraser, 20, of Coniston Avenue, Padiham, had only been jailed a year ago for a similar attack.

Sentencing, Judge Woolman added: “When you are sober you are probably alright but when you are drunk you are fairly disgusting.”

Prosecutor Sarah Statham said trouble began when Fraser came home for his tea, after watching an England World Cup game on June 23.

He had been drinking and managed to spill most of his meal.

Mrs Donoghue cleaned up but her son became aggressive, punching a door and headbutting a light fixture in the kitchen, as his grandmother also looked on.

Fraser demanded £50 from the pair but his mother refused, say-ing he wanted to go back out, said Ms Statham.

But Mrs Donoghue said he had to stay in because he was meeting his probation officer the next morning.

Fraser became abusive and started emptying kitchen drawers, pulling out a pair of large orange-handled scissors.

Ms Statham said: “He brandished them in his mother’s face and said ‘I want some money now’.”

The mother and grandmother were frightened and as he left Fraser warned his mother if she called in the police, he would ‘smash her head in’.

The court heard Fraser, who admitted robbery and criminal damage, was given six months in a young offenders institution for the previous attack on his mother.

Richard Taylor, defending, said although the incident must have been ‘terrifying’, no physical injury was caused.

He added that Fraser was remorseful and acknowledged he had a problem with his drinking and anger management.
