THE family of a severely disabled man wants more disability-friendly buses to be put in place.

Ashley McDermott, 22, is wheelchair-bound due to his cerebral palsy.

And his carer Marie Iddon said that he has been left frustrated by the lack of accessible buses in Blackburn.

Ashley, who lives in Carnforth Close, near Roman Road, has repeatedly been left stranded because of a lack of suitable buses.

Mrs Iddon said: “The bus company attitude is completely inappropriate. Ashley loves travelling on buses and trains but buses prove so difficult.

“We have complained but have been told that by law the company does not have to make sure all buses are wheelchair accessible until 2014.

The message seems to be that disabled people are not welcome on the buses.”

Mrs Iddon said that she frequently uses the number two and number 12 Transdev services, which she said rarely have modern vehicles.

And she said a recent trip to Darwen saw the pair stranded after a series of old-fashioned buses on the number two route went past.

“We’d like to contact Ashley, his family and carer Marie, to see if there is anything more we could do to help.”
