A POLICEMAN has been recognised for tackling crime and making residents feel safer in Pendle.

PC Brian Magee was awarded the prestigious George Herbert Red-man Award at a special awards ceremony held at Lancashire Constabulary headquarters.

The award acknowledges his two-year role as community beat manager in Brierfield where he made a total of 110 arrests.

PC Magee, who is now community beat manager for Colne, is no stranger to plaudits, having previously received a bravery award for preventing a suicidal man from jumping off the multi-storey Pendle Rise car park, in Nelson.

He was also hailed by the Brierfield community after he arrested a man who caused distress to his vulnerable elderly neighbour.

And he received further praise when he caught two men who stole holiday money from another pensioner.

PC Magee has also been responsible for setting up a number of initiatives aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour, working closely with schools and overseeing the launch of the youth PACT (Police and Communities Together) to help improve relat-ions with youngsters.

Lancashire’s Assistant Chief Constable, Wendy Walker, said: “Brian has quite obviously made a significant impact in improving the lives of the people of the comm-unity and increasing trust and confidence in Lancashire Police.”

He vowed to donate his £100 award to Pendleside Hospice, based in Colne Road, Reedley.
