IMPROVING parks, developing new sports facilities and tackling the number of empty homes have been set as key aims of Pendle Borough Council.

The council has outlined its strategic plan for the next three years, with a raft of objectives put forward.

These also include identifying more land for employment, leisure and housing development, regenerating the M65 corridor and creating more affordable homes.

Promoting the Conservative party’s Big Society has also been declared a key aim, alongside setting targets to reduce crime, supporting an ‘effective CCTV system’ and overseeing a shake-up of GP services.

Council bosses say they want to work in partnership with Lancashire County Council to develop new sports facilities at the former Edge End School site.

Barnfield Construction will be partners in creating a new clubhouse, cricket oval and football pitch at the former Lucas Sports Ground site.

It is also hoped the borough can see one more park be given a prestigious Green Flag by 2014.

Councillors also detail how they will work with residents to improve recycling, encourage people to report dog fouling and litter louts and reduce the borough’s carbon footprint.

The plan is set against the backdrop of government funding cuts, but bosses are optimistic.

Pendle Council, Chief Executive Stephen Barnes said: “This will be the most challenging three year plan we’ve ever had to do.

“It will focus on how we continue to provide good services despite the reductions in our funding.”

The Strategic Plan sets out the top twelve priorities for councillors to agree.

Coun Mike Blomeley, leader of Pendle Council, said: “This means making sure residents are involved in making decisions about their local areas and can play a part in improving the quality of life in their neighbourhoods.”

The plan will be rubber-stamped at a meeting of the executive on Thursday.
