FLYTIPPERS carrying out ‘spring cleans’ are dumping dozens of bags of waste in Darwen back streets, claim worried residents.

Items including toys, a vacuum cleaner, mattress, bedroom furniture and packaging were strewn along an alley behind Preston Street last week, as well as between Springfield Street and Alice Street.

Other problem areas are at the rear of Sudell Road and also Garner Street.

Coun Eileen Entwistle said: “It’s awful. A real problem. Once one person dumps their rubbish, other people think it’s okay to do the same.

"People don’t take pride anymore. I wonder what goes on in their heads.

“It’s such a shame for the people who have to live there and are confronted with it.”

Coun Dave Smith said: “It seems the problem has got worse because the weather’s improved.

“People are having a spring clean, but are just shoving things out into the back, rather than clear up properly.”

Coun Faryad Hussain, of Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: “Investigations are ongoing and the council will not hesitate to prosecute if sufficient evidence is found.

“We want to send out a clear message that this will not be tolerated.

“If anyone is found to be fly tipping, we will investigate and prosecute you. There is a good chance you will be caught – so don’t do it. There is no hiding place.”
