GREENGROCER Peter Camm can't be pipped when it comes to apples – for he serves more than 30 varieties at his stall on Rawtenstall Market.

Customers come from far and wide to sample everything from Golden Delicious to Royal Gala.

And he even offers them a free slice as a taster as there are so many to choose from.

Peter, 40, from Haslingden, said the most popular apples were not available in the big superstores.

He said: “The Galaxy is a sweet red striped apple which sells really well.

“We sell a few boxes of those and it's ideal for children as it's small.

“Some of the best selling apples are the unheard of varieties from independent growers.

"All our apples are grown in this country.

"I put my orders in with the wholesalers who get supplies from Brogdale Farm, which is home to the National Fruit Collection in Kent.”

Before he became king of apples, Peter was a technician for Gaskell Textiles in Oswaldtwistle.

After he was made redundant 11 years ago, he set up a stall on Haslingden Market with wife Diane selling fresh fruit and veg.

They have since closed that down and have moved their outdoor stall on Rawtenstall Market to a bigger pitch inside, which their 16-year-old son Jake helps run on Saturdays.
