UNITED Utilities have reiterated police warnings that thieves who stole £10,000 worth of copper wiring from a Hoddlesden substation could have died.

As reported in yesterday's Lancashire Telegraph, the substation was raided on Sunday night.

Now the utilities company, which owns the substation, wants to prevent any copycat crimes.

A spokesman said: "The people responsible are literally dicing with death. We could easily have been dealing with someone being electrocuted.

"As well as the obvious danger to themselves, the actions of these thieves also caused inconvenience for our customers.

"If anyone has information about this incident, please contact the police."

The break-in, which police say was pre-planned, was between 8pm and midnight at United Utilities in Carus' Mill. Anyone with information should call CID on 01254 353 842.
