COUNTY councillor Michael Green braved the mud to join voluntary archaeologists at Accrington’s voyage into the past.
The Plantation Mill area of Peel Park has been transformed into a hive of industry as local people work together to dig, survey and record the site of the former Arden Hall, built in 1846 for the Hargreaves family, who owned Plantation Mill and the Broad Oak Printworks.
Expert guidance is on hand from Oxford Archaeology North, an independent archaeology practice and educational charity with extensive experience of working with volunteers, who are leading the excavation.
Coun Green said: “There is a real sense of excitement at the dig, you never know quite what you might find.”
The scheme is being funded by Lancashire Environmental Fund as part of the regeneration of the park.
