A BURGLARY and car crime crackdown saw members of Lancashire police’s mounted branch take to the streets of Blackburn and Oswaldtwistle.
The horses patrolled crime hotspots while officers stopped and searched suspected offenders as part of Operation Spartacus, which is running across Blackburn with Darwen, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley.
Sgt Tim McDermott, from Eastern Division’s Targeted Crime Team, said: “The horses provide a highly visible police presence in a community. They can help to prevent crime from occurring and provide extra reassurance to members of the public.
“They are another tactic that we are using in our fight against criminals. Burglary and car crime offences remain low and we will do all we can to keep it that way.”
There are 18 horses in the mounted branch. Each horse is named after a county town including Downham, Belthorn, Darwen and Sawley.
