Preston city centre has been brought to a standstill this afternoon following a protest by hackney carriage drivers over railway parking allocation.

Communters at Preston Railway Station were left standing after about 90 cabbies staged a 'go slow' protest through the city centre.

It is understood that the lawful protest was in reaction to a Virgin Trains announcement that just 12 taxis would be allowed to use the rank at any one time.

Currently several cabs queue single file at the taxi rank, off Fishergate, picking up fares in turn.

Chief Inspector Paul Wilson said: "Officers from the Road Policing Unit were out from early today in an attempt to minimise the disruption caused by today's taxi protest across the city.

"Around 90 taxis took place in the protest which, given the already congested nature of Preston's roads, quickly resulted in delays for local drivers.

"It was, and remained throughout, a lawful protest, severely restricting the action officers were able to take."
