A village fete, cancelled due to a lack of volunteers, has been thrown a lifeline by the local council.

South Ribble Borough Council licensing bosses have granted permission for a premises licence for Longton Recreation Ground, Liverpool Road in the village.

This will allow the annual village fete to go ahead next year if sufficient volunteers can be found.

The 32-year-old Longton Village Fete, which attracted more than 1,000 people last year, has been axed this year as organisers say there is not enough support for the event.

The departure of key players, including the fete's committee chairwoman, Doris Spence, led to the cancellation of the event on May 17.

Anyone interested in volunteering for next year's fete should email mic0802@onetel.com with their interest.

The fete shouldn't need volunteers. If the local parish councillors actually got off their big backsides for once and actually contributed something to the village then all would be well. What is the point of having parish elected members if they choose to do nothing when the once-a-year village get-together is on its knees. They really are a complete and utter waste of space.

The comments made by "waste of space" are uncalled for and completely wrong.Parish councillors like any other elected official are there to fulfil a function within the management of the community. They are not there to hold fund raising events. Whilst we all like to blame the local council etc for everything, there are somethings you have to take responsibility for yourselves.
Members of the Longton Lions have been organising this event along with other local groups for years, but like most simular groups and organisations they have dwindled in number. Perhaps if "Waste of space" and the rest of the community were to join such groups then their village would be richer for their help.
A big thankyou to all the organisers of the past, you will be missed by someand sadly you will quickly be forgotten by the likes of the previous poster who probable is a "waste of space"
