WHILST I would not wish to deny Coun Mulla's right to express an opinion on the Harry Potter novels, I would question his understanding of reality and fiction.

The books are written as entertainment for young and old. They are well composed in excellent prose and have been instrumental in the reawakening the interest of young persons in reading.

If parents and educationalists utilise these excellent books correctly they can be used to introduce young people to a wider range of reading and assist them to question the moralities of life and indeed religion. Such books should not be condemned for their content nor should they be interpreted literally.

Indeed many other books including religious tomes are often incorrectly interpreted by those who wish to use them to support their own evil ends. This does not mean they should be condemned.

I regret Coun Mulla's letter indicates at best he is naive and at worse intolerant. The latter not being a truly British trait. I do hope he approaches his council work with a more open mind.

I am a Christian and have thoroughly enjoyed the books along with my "impressionable" grandchildren who have accepted them for what they are - a jolly good yarn.
