I have been intrigued by the plethora of letters responding to Shuiab Khan’s provocative remark that ‘most people don’t care if anything is halal or not’.

As in his public support for the wearing of the burka, I think Mr Khan is allowing his ethnicity to cloud his vision.

I do hope he has realised by now that whilst stimulating a discussion on such an emotive topic, he has lost the debate as the only non-Muslim reader in agreement with him seems to be the liberal Dean of the Cathedral.

Most issues seem to have been covered on the Letters Page but may I suggest that the practice of serving halal would be stamped out if we ignored the major supermarkets and bought our meat at the local butchers or farm shops where its source can be verified.

How long before Lancashire County Council follows Harrow Council, London, and imposes halal meat into our schools?

Should this happen, may I remind parents of non-Muslim children that they can take action and seek redress through the European Court of Human Rights for violation of Articles 9 and 10 of the charter relating to rights to freedom of thought, conscience and religious belief – and claim compensation.
