In the Preston and Leyland Citizen, February 14, you covered a story Free Elderly Travel Spells Cash Dilemma for Council.

It referred to a cash short fall in South Ribble Council budget for year 2008/9 once pensioners receive free bus travel from April 1 2008.

From April 1 pensioners will not be entitled to free travel throughout England as rumoured. Pensioners will only get free travel within zones in England.

From where I live in Hutton the best I can hope for is free travel to Preston where now it costs 50p after 9.30am and to Southport where it now costs 50p.

If I wish to continue on the X2 service to Liverpool it will cost me half fare return.

As for South Ribble and its short fall, perhaps it could balance its books by cutting back on the politically correct departments that councils seem keen to employ these days on salaries in excess of £50,000.

If the councils spent less of our money on creating huge but empty open plan offices there would be more money in the kitty. I went into the council office recentlt and could not help wondering why such a huge and costly facelift was needed. And at what cost?
There were many "Booths" with costly PC's installed, but only 2 in use. There also seemed to be lots of people just standing around giggling whilst "Joe Public" had to sit and wait for some sort of service. A girl sat at the desk in reception area looked to be a poor investment as all she seemed to do was tell people to "wait over there" which the would have done anyway.
I also have to say that I am full of admiration for the man outside who has single handedly campained against "A Corrupt Council". Come on South Ribble - he is a man who believes in his fight. He has many who agree with him and what he is protesting about as many have seen or know of something simular. Find a way to end this campain and let him resume normal life with a sense of justice.
