FRIENDS of Darwen Library are seeking more information about the life of a local artist.

The friends are compiling information about impressionist James H Morton, and seeking additional knowledge of him as a young man.

Little is known about his early life and the friends are considering theories he left a sweetheart, or even a fiancée behind when he went off the fight in the First World War, which claimed his life. The friends have photographs of a Margaret Ellen Chew who lived at Isherwood Fold House, Edgworth, until her death in 1949. The friends say they feel it is likely that Margaret, a milliner and costumier, got engaged to JHM shortly before he went off to war. But without evidence they can’t be sure.

FODL are hoping someone with more knowledge will come forward with information about Miss Chew. The Darwen artist died, aged 37, on the Western Front just five days before the end of war. For more information visit www.fodl.webstarts.com
