LANCASHIRE aerospace giant BAE Systems is pioneering new technology that could play a key role in battle against illegal immigrants.

The development of Hero, a semi autonomous ground vehicle produced at their Warton site, is a mark of the company’s focus on new forms of unmanned vehicles and machinery.

Hero has been on a trial with the UK Border Agency as they ramp up operations to keep illegal immigrants out of the country.

Born out of a concept to help protect British troops on foot patrol in Iraq and Afghanistan, Hero is roughly the size of a briefcase with a wheel at each corner.

It is equipped with lights and cameras and check beneath lorries, coaches and trailers arriving at Calais – Europe’s busiest port.
